As you can see in the welcome section at the side of the blog, "Into The Fire" is meant to be a companion piece to Black Rep's production of A Time of Fire. The hope is that this blog will be an informative tool in exploring the war in Uganda and help the readers better understand the events surrounding Charles Mulekwa's play.
I think it is important to mention a few things before starting. It is important to recognize that this blog is starting after the close of the production. As the current intern at PBRC, I was hoping to be doing dramaturgy during the course of the production. Unfortunately that did not happen for one reason or another. However, the dramaturgy that did go into the production was very in depth and is worth the process of archiving.
In a related subject, it is very important to recognize the efforts and contributions of two people; the playwright Charles Mulekwa and Geri Augusto, who is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Public Policy at Brown University.
As a fellow artist, one can't help but respect the work put forth by Mr. Mulekwa. His experiences in Uganda can only be described as unimaginable, and I would imagine it takes a great deal of fortitude to express such events in a public forum such as the theatre. I think I speak for the entire staff at Black Rep when I say how grateful I am of Mr. Mulekwa's efforts in ensuring that A Time of Fire was brought to the stage, as well as the efforts of his fellow colleagues at Brown University, and the regular supporters of PBRC.
Prof. Augusto has put forth a great deal of information and I do not intend to type out her research word for word. However I would like to express first and foremost that her work will be a pivotal part of this blog and I would like to offer credit where credit is due. Other sources will be credited within these entries, however I wanted to give Prof. Augusto advanced recognition.
Also keep in mind that newer posts will most likely be posted on top (unless I can change the formatting), so information might come in seemingly backwards. It is merely coming in as I am posting it.
For those of you who saw the production of A Time of Fire, thank you on behalf of Providence Black Repertory. We hope you will support the theater in the future.
Let us go into the fire.
